iPad new OS and battery power

Wow, the new iOS 7 literally EATS battery power!! What you need to do is to go in under "Settings" and shut off a lot of functions that are not necessary!

Get ready to play with your settings because here is a slew of tips that will help you save your batteries... I am starting at the top of the "settings" page and working my way down

Always be diligent about really shutting down apps you are not using, you do this by double clicking the home button, your most recent apps will pop up on the bottom, put your finger on it and swipe up to remove, this should help with battery life too..

AirPlane Mode
One thing I do on my iPhone/iPad when I travel and want to preserve Battery power is that I go in under "Settings" and I put the slider to Airplane Mode!
Yes I can not get any emails, I can not get phone calls etc.. when it is in Airplane mode, but hey I figure I can survive a couple of hours not being connected. I realize this might not be feasible for you since you are relying on the iPad as a navigation tool, but do play around with it and you will be happily surprised. For example at night when you are sleeping turn it to Airplane Mode...

WiFi
Another thing I do is to turn of WIFI when I am not in a WIFI environment (you will find this in Settings too). What happens is that the iPhone/iPad is constantly looking or "pinging" for a connection and all this constant searching is draining the batteries.. That is also why Airplane mode saves so much batteries..no "pinging" all the time

Bluetooth
make sure Bluetooth is set to "OFF"

Notification Center
Go through this list to see what apps you really want to have a notification messages pop up for (a notification message can be the banner that pops up on the home screen when you get a new text, it is the red number in the corner of an app that indicates how many messages you have etc,,)... I removed all apps from this and have only "messages", and "phone" activated.

Control Center
Turn of "Airdrop" - You will only see this function on your iPhone5

General
  • Siri - Turn her off unless you are truly in a hands off situation and needs her
  • Spotlight - Spotlight allows you to search for files on your whole iPad, this little function will index all new data and sucks battery power, only keep things you really want to be able to search for like "contacts" , "mail" etc..
  • Accessibility  - Go down to "reduce Motion" and set this for "on"  - This will take away "parallex" the three dimensiional effect that makes the "wallpaper" look like it is moving behind the apps
  • Background App refresh, turn to OFF
Wallpapers & Brightness
Turn off "auto Brightness" and set the brightness manually

Privacy
Click on location Services and turn it off for all the apps except the ones you really want it for such as your navigation app etc..find my iPhone etc. At the bottom of this window click on System Services and turn off functions you might not need such as "Popular near me", "frequent locations", "location based iAds" etc..
Mail, Contacts, Calendars
Under "fetch new data" turn OFF "Push", make sure "fetch" is the chosen option for your mail accounts, set the frequency to be "manually" or hourly if you feel like that.

iTunes and App store
Make sure "Automatic Downloads " are set to the "OFF" position for all Music, Apps, Books, Updates
